Transport for NSW will carry out safety improvement work on Homebush Bay Drive, Australia Avenue and Underwood Road between Sunday 22 September and Thursday 19 December 2024.

The work will improve motorist and pedestrian safety and traffic flow at the Homebush Bay Drive, Australia Avenue and Underwood Road roundabout and at the Homebush Bay Drive on/off ramps, especially during peak periods and special events.

What work are we doing?

  • installing advanced warning signage for motorists on the Homebush Bay Drive off ramps
  • installing ‘roundabout operating’ signs
  • installing a pedestrian fence on the western corner of the roundabout
  • relocating the pedestrian crossing on the western corner of the roundabout approximately two to three metres further north.

As part of this work, we will install new electrical cabling and traffic loop detectors in the road. This will involve excavating sections of the footpath and road surface. These sections will be temporarily filled in after each shift and permanently restored before project completion.

Our work schedule

We will be working for up to 40 night shifts between Sunday 22 September and Thursday 19 December 2024, weather permitting.

We will work up to five nights a week between Sunday and Thursday, 8pm and 5am the next day, to complete the work as quickly as possible.

We will not work on Friday nights or Saturdays or on the upcoming Monday 7 October 2024 public holiday.

What will this mean for you and how will we manage it?

Our work needs to be carried out at night to minimise disruption to traffic and reduce safety risks to our workers, pedestrians, and motorists. It may be noisy at times, but we will do everything we can to minimise our impacts, including:

  • turning off equipment and vehicles when they are not in use
  • completing the noisier tasks by midnight
  • installing noise blankets around our work when carrying out noisy activities such as jackhammering
  • using quieter equipment where possible.

Asbestos removal

We may uncover asbestos during the work. If this happens, work in the immediate area will stop while asbestos materials are fully assessed and safely removed.

Transport for NSW works with qualified asbestos professionals, such as licensed asbestos removalists and Licensed Asbestos Assessors, to safely manage and remove asbestos from project sites and dispose of
any asbestos waste to licensed waste facilities.

Traffic changes

There will be temporary traffic changes to make sure the work zone is safe. Lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place and may affect travel
times. Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.

Homebush Bay Drive on/off ramp closures
We may need to close the Homebush Bay Drive on/off ramps at some stage during this work. We will notify the community again if ramp closures are required. Traffic changes will also be displayed on variable message signage boards around the work site at least five days before any traffic changes come into effect.

Pedestrian access
Access to pedestrian crossings and footpaths will be maintained under the guidance of traffic controllers.

Homebush Bay Drive and Australia Avenue intersection upgrade project

The Homebush Bay Drive and Australia Avenue intersection upgrade project is currently in design planning.

The upcoming safety improvement work will support road safety and traffic flow in the short term, particularly during peak periods and special events,
while the project design is being finalised. We will update the community once further information is available on the project and next steps.

Transport for NSW thanks the community for their patience while we complete this important work.
